The cross of Calvary is the solution to the indifference many Christians have toward lost sinners – an indifference that leads to the certainty of eternal loss. The purpose of the story of the rich man and Lazarus is often overlooked by our obsession to make sure people understand that this is not really what happens at death. While we need to address that, it is vital to understand that this story, coming at the end of a series of parables in Luke 15 and 16, which show that God cares about lost people, reveals that Christian indifference to the lost, and people in need, will result in forfeiting eternal life. We must and can be like God by caring about and for lost people and those in need.
